I’m going to help you properly plan for success in 2020. Big promise I know, as it’s a tough bag setting personal goals. But I believe that this really could be the year your achieve your goals – and I’m going to show you how!

I took a good month or so off over Christmas. As so many people, I was wrapped up in the family time, present giving, food eating and general merriment of the season. But as New Year hit, I realised that so much of my year, though filled with great memories and some achievements, had been led by.. well.. nothing.

I often struggle with the monotony of day to day life and it struck me recently that this is because I don’t set myself proper personal goals. Well thought out, self resonating goals that I actually want to achieve – for me.

I mean that’s the driving force behind life, in my opinion. Experiences. Achievements. And so I’m setting out for Success in 2020 like I’ve never reached before. I’ve dropped the whole ‘New year, New Me!’ ( in honesty, I did a few years ago!). I don’t want to change myself – I don’t need to change myself. Not completely anyway.

Instead, I want to add real value and worth to my life by having something to strive towards, look forward to and celebrate when I achieve it. Success in 2020 is what I’m going for, and what that looks like is personal to me the same as it’s personal to you.

You may not know what you want to achieve yet, or how to get there, but with my Goal Setting Series, you’ll know soon enough!

WHY DOES GOAL SETTING MATTER?

I bet you do it every year.

Come the stroke of midnight on New Years eve, or even the few days running up to it, you think about all the ‘resolutions’ you made last year; all the things you wanted to achieve.. but didn’t.

And yeah, it makes you feel like crap, but it can also give you that fire to say ‘This year, I’m going to do it! I’m going to.. lose weight/read more/travel/spend more time with family/save’.

These intentions are great, but thats all they are at this point – intentions. Something is holding you back from transforming them from well intentioned ideas, into real actionable goals. It may be excuses or it may be that you just don’t quite know how to get yourself from point A to point B.

This is why goal setting is the key. As with anything in our grown up world, cogs turn better and we achieve more with planning. The old proverb ‘fail to prepare… prepare to fail’ is oh so true in this instance.

Studies suggest that you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down, which is why creating actionable steps – a plan to work with – is how you are not only going to know what you want to achieve this year; it’s not only how you get there; it’s also WHY those personal goals matter so much!

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS IN 2020

a year in review

Before you even think about what you want to achieve in 2020, how did last year go?

Reflection is a vital part of planning; we can understand what went well, what we enjoyed, where we succeeded but also what sucked, what challenged us and made us learn.

So how was 2019 for you? It’s a difficult question to answer straight off the bat so try sitting for a minute and really reflect on last year. Then, when you’re ready, grab a notebook and pen and answer these questions. Be as openly honest with yourself as you can. Remember, no one else has to see your answers – its all for your benefit!

  • How would you initially sum up the year?
  • Focus on one or two memorable good moments and think about the following:
    • Why do they stand out for you?
    • What led to them being positive experiences? (Was it something you did? Perhaps it was a day out where everything went right. Maybe a test you did exceptionally well in. You might’ve achieved one of your goals from last year.)
    • How did it make you feel?

Now, the same again, but this time something which wasn’t so great. Repeat the same process but for one or two moments which weren’t so good.

Got those down? Self reflection often can help us unwrap exactly what happened and why. It helps us to understand our emotions, responses and more of ourself.

Take a moment to pause and reflect on 2019. These prompts will help you to better understand the year.

  • What were you most proud of in 2019?
  • What drained and overwhelmed you the most? Why? What was happening?
  • Something you learned along the way. A new skill, a life lesson. What stand out the most?
  • What big mistake did you make? what did you learn from it?
  • Where did you waste time? Social media, waiting on others, waiting for things to ‘happen’
  • What didn’t really matter?
  • What negative thoughts controlled my behaviour?
  • Did I focus on things out of my control?

How are you feeling? Emotional would be my answer! Looking back over memories can be difficult, especially if you’ve had a tough year. But its also really healthy and proactive to help us learn where we go from here.

self reflection & mindset shifting

Now you’ve reflected on the twists and turns that made up 2019 let’s talk about you.

Identifying what challenged us and what obstacles were in our way will provide us with the knowledge going forward for success in 2020. In many cases you may have to be brutally honest with yourself and admit that you yourself created those obstacles.

My biggest one is “I haven’t got time!’. What I’ve realised recently is that I’m not using the time I do have proactively. Thats why things like setting a structured morning routine, going to bed at the right time for you and putting down our phones are just as important as reflection.

As well as this though, there is often a sense of self belief which many of us lack or have lost as we’ve gotten older.

There have been many studies proving that positive thinking can bring about positive experiences. It can help not only to improve mental health and self love but also to achieve those things you’ve been telling yourself for so long were out of reach.

In his book, Good Vibes, Good LifE: How Self- Love Is The Key To Unlocking Your Greatness, Vex King discusses the Law of Vibration.

‘Reality as we perceive it occurs through matching vibrations… The Human ear for example, will only hear sound waves that are between 20 and 20,000 vibrations per second. This doesn’t mean other sound waves don’t excist; we just can’t perceive them…. If the Universe is responsive to our thoughts, words, feelings and actions.. then it’s assumed by the Law of Vibration that we can control our reality.

Change the way you think, feel, speak and act, and you begin to change your world’

I LOVE this mindset – and book! I highly recommend you go buy it. Go! It’s on Amazon here.

If you believe, really believe, that something is possible – and conversely, not possible – it will be. Taking on this mindset is easy in theory but tougher in practice. It takes will power and consistency. That’s why I use positive affirmations and self talk.

Repeating positivity to yourself will help make that thing more real and consequently, as Vex puts it, ‘increase the chances of it coming to you in your physical reality’. It really is one of the main factors in achieving success in 2020.

And for me this is the most profound step going forward; taking responsibility for myself and my life. Not using others as excuses but owning my actions. Admitting that I myself abuse the time I have and don’t use it wisely. That I put off doing things which benefit me.

And secondly, that with a bit of positivity and a dash of faith, we really can achieve anything we set our minds to!

Goal Setting 101 – What’s Important To You?

If I had to ask you right now, what your goals are for the coming year, would you be able to tell me?

What if I asked you how you plan to achieve them? I’m pretty sure you’ve got a vague idea in your head, but this is where you’re setting yourself up to fail.

Anchoring our ideas within your personal life values and writing them down with a clear plan of achievement is what changes an intention or a resolution into a goal.

In order to do this, take a minute and think about what really matters to you in life. Chose around 5 words, values or ideals which sum up you and your world. What drives you to get up in the morning and inspires you to seek out success.

As an example mine are Family, Health, Happiness, Peace & Stability.

Yours could be absolutely anything from wealth and independence, community and creativity or leadership and trust.

By understanding what the driving force behind us is, we can work out not just what our goals are but specifically why we want to achieve them.

What are your 2020 Goals?

Have you had a big ‘thing’ that you’ve been wanting to try for years but haven’t started yet?

Perhaps it’s something simple such as being more organised.

Whatever your goals are I want you to write them down, right now. You are so much more likely to achieve success in 2020 if you have them written down.

Everyone is going to be different in what they want to achieve and why – and thats ok! If your goal is to wake up with your alarm every day that is just as valid as being able to run a marathon or climb Mount Everest.

Achieving personal goals often takes more thought and focus than you'd think. By being specific in our goals we can really achieve success in 2020

But to make them truly achievable we need to anchor our core beliefs to them. Not only will this give your goal more substance, it will give you a specific aim to focus on.

Let’s focus on one of mine as an example.

In 2020 I want to make my blog succeed

Great. A starting point. And you may think this is enough initially, but really want am I saying? What do I mean when I say ‘succeed’? Success comes in different forms to different people. By really thinking about what I want to achieve and physically writing it, I have something I can then create an actionable plan around.

In 2020, I want my blog to become a source of income for my family.

You see how much better that is? For me, success in 2020 for my blog means a viable income for my family.

It’s important that your personal goals for the year (or week, or month!) are things that really, really matter to you. Deep in your gut. Make sure they are things which will truly improve your life; things you really want to achieve!

Prioritise YOU

Often when we decide that we want to change or achieve something in our life, it can be for the wrong reasons.

Don’t create goals based on other peoples expectations – you won’t stick to them and you won’t really want to achieve them.

This needs to be about YOU. If you’re making ‘promises’ or intentions to do things other people expect of you, whether IRL or because of society pressure, put down the pen and regroup.

To create success in 2020 we need ensure our goals are focused on us – the most important person in this process; that they aren’t centred around comparing to others, pleasing others or doing things which don’t really matter to you.

So if we use my example above and expand on it, why and how is that important to me. How will it help to improve my life and wellbeing?

In 2020, I want my blog to become a source of income for my family so my stress is reduced and I can afford, not only to look after my family day to day, but do all the things I really want to do for them; Like take them to Disneyland Paris.

Obviously this is a really personal goal for me. It covers so many of my anchors because creating an income from my blog would quash so many anxieties and stresses I have in my life. Also, Disneyland Paris has been a ‘plan’ since my eldest was born; he turns 6 in March and I would LOVE to be able to afford to take all of my brood without financially struggle.

Now it’s your turn. I’ve giving you the outline for how to go about laying the groundwork for your goals. I’ve shown you how to create an actionable, anchored goal that really matters to you. All you have to do now is follow my 5 steps and you’ll be ready for the next part in my Goal Setting Series!

What are you going to make a success in 2020? Which Goals are most important to you? Let me know in the comments and we can achieve our goals together!
