5 Simple Steps To Achieve With Smart Goals

In case you missed the memo, I quite like self care! I think it is the single most important to improving wellbeing & mental health. I’m not talking just about taking a long bubble bath (find out the basics of self care here!) but more actionable self care that has an impact on your life.

In this case, Goal Setting & how setting SMART goals can massively improve not only your focus, but your chance of success!

And because striving towards a goal releases the hormone dopamine, (the chemical which motivates us to act) and serotonin (the happy hormone released when we feel significant) you’re also going to see a boost to your self love by prioritising your wants and needs!

I, like many of you, have had struggles with goal setting and success for as long as I can remember.

I always start off with the best of intentions; a basic outline of a plan or schedule and all the gusto needed to succeed. But sooner or later, I miss a task or fall behind and then give in.

I have failed at so many things over the years. But I’ve come to see that most of my ‘failure’ was due to me not setting myself up for success from the beginning.

My goals were either constantly changing, weren’t clearly aligned with my anchors (learn how to find your anchors here) or were, frankly non existent. They were an intention; a promise to myself, and we all know that they are the easiest broken!

The other thing I used to do which set me up to fall before I’d even begun was set myself too many goals or challenges at once.

I was never going to achieve these goals as I was overloading myself & setting myself up for burnout! Not only that, but I didn’t have the correct ‘tools’ at my disposal.

Any of this sounding familiar?

If the answer is yes! Then I’ve got your back!

So how did I change positive intentions and determination into actual success.

If you’ve already got your reflection worksheets from How To Set Yourself Up For Success in 2020 then you’ve already made the first step toward goal setting you can achieve!

Understanding our previous ‘failures’ helps us learn and grow – so don’t really think of them as failures, more… extensive practice! After all, even the greats like Thomas Edison don’t get it right on the first attempt!

Just like any new skill, it can take time to perfect. But I’m going to teach you how to really set yourself up to not only achieve that one big goal you have in your mind today, but how to consistently and easily plan for new, reachable goals!

With a little thing called SMART goals, we’ll get you energised and organised in no time to start working towards those goals TODAY!

I’m just just talking about well thought out goals here, oh no! When it comes to SMART goals, every letter counts. This goal setting system really works because, as I mentioned in How To Set Yourself Up For Success in 2020, you are more likely to achieve your goals if you they are detailed & well thought out. Or… Specific Measureable Achieveable Relevent and Time Bound.

The SMART goal setting concept has been around since the 80s, first coined by George T. Doran in and issue of management review. Since then however it has been cited and used by businesses and individuals alike!

So let’s break it down.

Goals which are clear and detailed, with focus and intent. More than a simple ‘I want to lose weight’ or ‘I want to get a promotion’. We start with an initial idea and then expand that to get -guess what! – Specific!

Have you got your classroom hats on? We’re going to use the ‘W’s method for this step of the Smart goals process; in this case focusing on 3 of the 5.

What do I want to achieve?

Why is it important to me?

Who does it benefit?

In my last post How To Set Yourself Up For Success in 2020 I used the example of my blog, so let’s role with that.

I want my blog to succeed (what) because I want to work from home & help people by sharing my passion for self care (why, relates to my anchors family, health, happiness, peace and stability. Also identified who succeeding in my goal benefits)

And you can use this for anything.

I want to lose weight (what) because I want to healthier and feel better about myself and my family (why and who).

I want to travel the world (what) because I want to expand my mind, live life and experience things I wouldn’t normal, creating memories to last a life time (why and who).

I want to move house (what) because we need more space. (why and who)

All of these are potential goals for myself. Some have more priority on my list than others. Some will have to wait a while – travelling with 3 under 5’s… erm.. no thanks! But they are all on the agenda and I know I’ll get there eventually using SMART goals.

Specifics. Done.

Having specific goals is a fantastic first step but if we aren’t tracking it, whether it be income, dress size, how quickly you run 10K – whatever! – how do we know when we’ve achieved our goals? If you want to stay focused and determined to succeed being able to assess your progress is essential.

The next step in the SMART goals process how you make your goal measurable completely depends on You and the goal you are setting. I want my blog to succeed from my blog but what how will I measure that?

How much do I want to earn?

How much traffic/sales/subscribers do I need?

How will I measure and track my progress over time?

Think about how you will know you’ve reached your goal.

Brainstorm where you want to be – what your end result is. Visualise it, and then write it down! Smart Goals will help you tremendously not just because of how easy the 5 steps are but because of how much your learn about yourself as well!

Measureable. Tick!

Now I obviously believe in you! That you can set anything you set your mind to! But let’s get real.

If I set myself a goal to achieve a Million pounds profit by June, I’d be reaching a bit!

Don’t get me wrong, that can totally be a lifetime, or long term goal, but realistically it’s not going to happen in 6 months time.

How do I know that? Because I’ve considered my current position, resources I have and obstacles which could be in my way.

You can too by asking yourself these questions.

Where am I now in relation to my goal?

What do I need to do to achieve it?

Can you dedicate time to it?

What are my obstacles?

When mulling over these questions, keep in mind goals which are out of your control.

For example, buy the big house on success street is an amazing goal to have! You want the best for yourself but, there are other factors such as the who else offers on the house and the sellers decision which could lead to a feeling of ‘failure’. Instead, save enough to buy the big house is a measurable, achievable goal completely in your control!

And hey, if success street doesn’t work out, there’s always something better around the corner, especially with the SMART goals strategy in your pocket!

Attainable. Check!

In my previous post How To Set Yourself Up For Success in 2020, I talked about anchoring our goals with core life values. And this is where those come in.

You have a goal in mind but does it really matter to you? It’s great to want to do something for other people, but if you’re setting a goal you think you should be setting its time to have a rethink?

As well as this, as I hinted to earlier, sometimes its just not the right time! So let’s check if that goal you’ve been planning out is really relevant!

Is it the right time? What other commitments do I have?

Does it matter to me?

Which of my anchors is it related to?

Is it effected by the global affairs?

For me, travelling is a huge WISH I want to become a goal, but right now it’s not relevant to my life. I don’t have the finances to jet off around the world. My kids aren’t old enough to take care of themselves. Plus with Coronavirus and BREXIT right now.. nah.. I think I’ll wait!

That doesn’t mean I will never travel, or that I can’t start setting smaller goals to achieve it later on. It’s just right now is not the time. And that’s ok.

Relevant goals aligned with your core beliefs will motivate you to succeed! So make sure they really matter, right now!

Revelent? Yes!

Finally, every goal needs a deadline. Or does it?

Setting a schedule to work by can be more beneficial. As New York Times Bestselling Author James Clear says.

‘Instead of giving yourself a deadline to accomplish a particular goal by (and then feeling like a failure if you don’t achieve it), you should choose a goal that is important to you and then set a schedule to work towards it consistently.

That might not sound like a big shift, but it is.’

His Book Atomic Habits (which you can get on Amazon Here!), teaches you how small changes can transform your habits!

And he’s right. Time doesn’t just focus on the end result but what you can do to achieve you goal right now and going forward.

Set your deadline or schedule.

Think about what you can do in the next month, 3 months, 6 months.

When will you set aside time towards achieving your goal?

What other commitments do you have right now?

Once you’ve put some thought into these questions, you should have a solid schedule of when you’ll go to the gym, how much time you’ll spend writing each week! You get the idea!

Now let’s round it all off and see exactly what a SMART goal looks like when all is said and done!

Let’s come back to the example of my blog again and see how this applies in practice!

S – I want to make my blog a success by making an income from it.

M – (my current BIG goal, as I have mini goals too!) is to earn a monthly income. I’ll track my progress my checking analytics, subscribers, traffic and income overtime (blah.. boring! but accurate, and measurable!A – this is a long term goal, that i can dedicate time to. That i will work towards every day through content creation, promotion and educating myself on how to get there.

R – aligns with my core values, truly matters to me because of the benefits, isn’t effected too much by global affairs as I will be working for myself!
T – I want to achieve this within 12 months. I can set aside evenings for majority of work but fit smaller bits in throughout the day.

By utilising the SMART goals system you’ll be in a fantastic place to start working towards your own goals! By really drilling down into the detail you can create a much clearer idea of not just what you want to achieve, but if its achievable! You’ll then feel engaged, energised and motivated to succeed! And I bet you!

What are you 2020 goals? Let me know in the comments!

Setting goals is easy with the SMART goals! Achieve your dreams with this simple strategy that breaks down how to plan goals effectively. No more wondering what you need to do or why you're doing it.

  1. There is so much goodness in this post! We so easily set goals that are difficult to actually achieve — not because they are “bad goals” but because they don’t align with where we are RIGHT NOW. It’s so important (as you shared) to look at specific goals and decide what type of schedule (step-by-step) will allow us to achieve what we are working towards. Love this share! Thank you so much for shedding more light on the importance of setting (smart) goals! 🙌

    • Absolutely! Setting a goal that’s not right for you, right now, would be like wearing a pair of shoes 2 sizes to small x

    • So glad you found it useful! There’s nothing wrong with having goals in different areas of your life, but when you get really specific on WHY you want to achieve your goals and the SMART steps, you’re much more likely to succeed! Good Luck <3

  2. Asking questions are in fact good thing if you are not understanding something
entirely, except this post presents nice understanding
